1999 SuperStats

Post-British GP Edition. Compilation by Rory Gordon, Australia

The Superstats is an on-going project that attempts to classify various performances throughout an F1 season by, generally, averaging each race's performance, in several categories, over the entire season.

Conceived as the SuperGrid by the late John Taylor for Autocourse, I started my own compilations when Taylor died. Originally, the SuperStats - as the project was to become - was developed purely for my own interest. This has not changed, and the day I get bored with the SuperStats, they will stop.

All figures used in the SuperStats are based on the official FIA timing sheets and, where necessary, those sheets are deemed to be the final authority.

Since it is now the half-way mark of the 1999 F1 season, it would seem like a good idea to look at each driver's performance in each of the main areas that figures are compiled on.

Any resemblence between the figures that appear here and what ensues during the rest of the season is purely coincidental... especially after Michael Schumacher's accident at the British GP.

As usual, any driver who has missed a session in any of the particular categories is marked with an asterisk ("*").

FRIDAY

Friday's session - there is actually only one session, split into two - cannot really be said to provide a pointer to the race result, you might think, as the teams try out a variety of settings in preparation for the next day.

However, this table (sorted on average postion) seems to show that, overall, the facts contradict this - with a few noteable exceptions.

SATURDAY/GRID

The expectation with the grid times would be that they would, generally, be considerably quicker than the Friday times. However, in 1999, this is not the case so far.

In fact, the grid times overall are slower than the Friday times. Of course, this is due to inclement weather.

This is also the last time that Michael Schumacher will appear in the "top" division of the SuperGrid for 1999 - missing a qualifying session automatically disqualifies a driver from the SuperGrid for that year.

SUNDAY WARM-UP

The Sunday monring warm-up is seen as an indicator of a possible race result by many people. Based on this table - sorted on average position - that statement might have a large measure of truth in it... then again, it might not.

RACE

There seems to have been some comment expressing, shall we say, astonishment at the performance of Eddie Irvine this season. Indeed, Irvine leads the SuperRace for 1999 in a number of categories (average position, laps completed, distance raced, and time raced).

This table - sorted on average position - shows the situation after a total of 8,034 racing laps, covering a total of 36,255.959 kilometres in a total of 202 hours, 40 minutes and 36.188 seconds.

Today's trivia item: based on the laps completed so far, there is a 68% chance of any one driver in any one race completing the full race distance.
