The Benetton team have announced that Gerhard Berger will not be taking part in this weekend's Canadian Grand Prix.

The Austrian, who recently had an operation for a sinus problem, has withdrawn on doctors' advice after a sinus infection became aggravated.

Alex Wurz, former ITC and current Benetton test driver, will replace his countryman for this race after impressing the team in recent tests.

Flavio Briatore, Benetton's managing director said: "It is obviously a disappointment for both Gerhard and the team. I wish Gerhard a speedy recovery, because we need him back on the track soon. However, I am confident that Alexander will do a good job in the meantime."

18th race?

It's possible that there will be an 18th race this season. The FIA have officially declared that the race of October 26will be the Grand Prix of Europe at Jerez (Spain). The FIA however doesn't exclude the Estoril race of November 9. They say that if the teams agree it too will be on this year's calendar. Portugese government is not very happy with the way things have gone because they still say the circuit would be ready on time.

Several teams have already responded negatively to an 18th race.
