Jean Todt has said Irvine could have been the key for Michael Schumacher to take the championship, if he does so next weekend at Jerez. Todt stated: "A tribute has to go to Irvine, because if we're in this situation now, it's thanks to him and the fantastic race he drove at Suzuka."

Todt also said Ferrari is working hard to make sure Schumacher has the best opportunity to take the championship: "This is a very important week. We can't work miracles, even though we are preparing really well for this last race. However, it would be a mistake to start celebrating now, before we know the final result."

Todt added on next season: "We're hoping that the new car will be able to race in practice before Christmas."
