Both Eddie Irvine as Michael Schumacher were testing different tyre compounds on the Mugello track. Schumacher had a gearbox problem, which ended his tests at twelve o'clock. His car was immediately taken to the factory at Fiorano for repairs. Irvine continued his tyre tests.

Schumacher Ferrari 1:27.586 31

David Coulthard was the fastest man on the Magny-Cours track. He continued to test various sorts of Bridgestone tyres. He improved a lot on yesterday's time. Juan Pablo Montoya is also working hard to make an impression and he did with setting the second fastest time in the Williams. Mika Hakkinen was still taking some time off but he probably will return at the wheel of his McLaren tomorrow.

Stephane Sarazin impressed in the Prost. Alain Prost said: "The team has given Stephane the opportunity to drive some 450 km in a Formula 1 car. He has known how to take advantage of it very fast. With the working method that he showed, we think that it is possible to set up a test programme with him in the near future."

Williams is very keen on keeping third spot in the constructor championship. Senior operations engineer James Robinson said: "'We're here to test in readiness for the race at the Nurburgring. It is still very important for us to continue developing the FW20 in order to retain our third position in the Constructors' Championship."
