Eddie Irvine will attend the final race of the season at Suzuka next week in spite of growing back pains. The Ulsterman suffered from back pains throughout the season but in his pains increased the last few weeks to the extent that there was growing concern over his Suzuka availability. Some speculation surfaced saying Irvine needing immediate surgery. Ferrari's test driver Luca Badoer was given more test days to prepare in case he should need to fill in. Further rumors circulated with Sauber lending Jean Alesi to Ferrari for the ultimate race (hence the rumors which began around the possibility that Alesi might replace Irvine altogether).

However, the Ferrari press office put an end to the speculations today saying Irvine, whose role in the championship battle for the drivers' title is considered crucial, is fit to race and will attend Suzuka as planned. "Irvine's car was fitted with a special orthopedic chair," said a Ferrari spokesperson to Atlas F1, "and after medical checks and several runs with the car, it was decided he can race."

Nevertheless, how Irvine's back might affect his ability to perform on his favorite track remains to be seen. His sister Sonja Irvine who is also his personal trainer and physiotherapist is said to be currently working closely with him in preparation for next week.
