Minardi's Marc Gene, competing in his first ever F1 grand prix, failed to qualify within 107 percent of the pole position time. Normally, this carries the penalty of exclusion from the race. However, he was allowed to start tomorrow's race, as the Stewards decided there were exceptional circumstances for his poor qualifying performance. A quick time in a previous session was considered as proof that the young Spaniard could drive quickly enough to race.
