Ferrari boss, Jean Todt, revealed that Michael Schumacher is currently undergoing surgery in Northampton General Hospital. "Michael Schumacher had an accident on the opening lap because of a problem with the rear brakes," said Todt. "We are investigating the cause. Michael has broken the tibia and fibula of the right leg. He is currently undergoing an operation in Northampton General Hospital."

Ferrari spokesman said earlier today that currently it is unclear how long Schumacher will be away or when he is likely to race again. The team also said they have not decided yet who will replace Schumacher while he is recovering.

Schumacher's teammate, Eddie Irvine, who said in the post-race press conference that Schumacher will return for the next Grand Prix, apologized later for his remarks, saying, "I am sorry if my remarks in the press conference about Michael's accident were misunderstood, but I was unaware until after the conference that he had been injured. I wish him a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing him back in the car as soon as possible."
