Prost Attacks French Press

Thursday December 14th, 2000

Alain Prost, owner of the team that bears his name, believes he and his outfit have been victims of a conspiracy from the French press to undermine both of them during the 2000 season.

The four-time World Champion and his team, Prost Grand Prix, struggled during the past season, finishing in last position in the Constructors' Championship after failing to score a single point.

The French team, who was powered by Peugeot engines and had Gauloises as its main sponsor - both French companies - was the target of many journalists with a political agenda, believes Prost.

"I've been the victim of targeted, precise and provable attacks," Prost said in an interview with F1 Racing. "There was a real desire to harm me and I can’t accept that. Am I going to get the lawyers on the case? I’m thinking about it. I’ve got some files.

"People run me down with worrying ease. Taking pleasure in spreading gossip is typically French and very Parisian. It’s also very annoying."

After Peugeot and Gauloises decided to withdraw from Formula One at the end of the year, Prost had to give up his dream of succeeding with an all-French team, and he signed a deal to use Ferrari engines, with which he expects to be competitive enough to take revenge.

"If we’re competitive in 2001, I’ll allow myself to say and prove a few things that not everyone will like to hear," he added. "Revenge will be on the track first then I’ll explain. The truth could well be uncomfortable.

"I will never forget and I will not forgive."
