Benetton's Giancarlo Fisichella underwent a successful operation on his right knee in a Rome hospital on Monday.
The Italian driver, who is thought to have damaged the joint in an accident during testing at Monza in September, was in the operating theatre one hour for arthroscopic surgery.
Fisichella will have a post-operation check-up on Friday and will then begin a muscle rehabilitation programme.
Fisichella is expected to resume training at the start of January at Benetton's pre-season camp in Lanzarote, before getting back into the cockpit shortly afterwards.
