Jaguar's newcomer Luciano Burti set the fastest time on the first day of testing at Estoril, Portugal. The Brazilian set a time of 1:26.58 - over a second faster than teammate Eddie Irvine, and over three seconds faster than Jenson Button in the Benetton-Renault, who finished the day second fastest.
However, heavy rain that was falling on the circuit throughout the day meant that little testing was done, and times were set in varying conditions.
"The conditions were not very good for testing as the rain kept starting and stopping," said Burti. "This meant that we’d change something on the car for the conditions and then the rain would stop before we went out again, so it was almost impossible to tell if the changes we were making were improving the car."
Jaguar, Benetton and Williams are running a four-day testing session, concentrated on tyres development with supplier Michelin. Irvine was driving alongside Burti; Williams are running test driver Marc Gene; and Benetton's newly signed test driver, Mark Webber, is scheduled to join Button tomorrow.
