Trulli Claims He Could Beat Schumacher

Wednesday December 20th, 2000

Jordan star Jarno Trulli believes three-time Formula One World Champion Michael Schumacher is not the best driver, and he also thinks he could beat the German if he had the same car.

"Give me a Ferrari and I will demonstrate that Michael Schumacher is not the best driver," Trulli said. "The best driver on absolute does not exist and never has.

"Given the same car, I’m sure I could do as well as Michael Schumacher, if not beat him," he added.

Trulli, who made his Formula One debut with the Minardi team back in 1997, finished in tenth place in the 2000 championship, his first year with Jordan alongside German Heinz-Harald Frentzen.

The 26 year-old Italian also confessed he believes he has been better than all his past teammates.

"I have always beaten my teammates, both in qualifying and the races. I was faster than Olivier Panis at the time of Prost and Olivier won at Monte Carlo. I have done better than Heinz-Harald Frentzen who was quicker than Schumacher in the Mercedes sports-prototypes."

Trulli, who set the fastest time during the final day of testing at the Barcelona circuit on Wednesday, admitted he could be a good replacement for Schumacher at Ferrari, becoming the first Italian to drive for the legendary team since Nicola Larini in 1994.

"I would personally accept an offer from Ferrari because I think I have demonstrated that I am an Italian driver who is capable of starting from the front row. All I need now is a win, and I feel sure Ferrari would help me to achieve that."
