Jackie Stewart: Paul's Disease was 'Worst Blow Ever'

Saturday December 30th, 2000

Former three-time World Champion Jackie Stewart has confessed finding out about his son's cancer was one of the worst moments of his entire life.

Paul Stewart, son of Jackie, worked as chief operating officer for the Jaguar Racing team, but he decided to leave his post after he was diagnosed with a treatable colon cancer earlier this year.

In an interview with the Daily Mail, Jackie admitted he was very scared when he heard the news.

"It was the worst blow I've ever had," Stewart admitted. "All my life I've avoided the unpredictable happening, so it was particularly horrible for me.

"I've seen death close up. Many of my friends in racing have died, but it was always someone else - not me or my family."

Stewart, who almost lost his life during the sixties after a heavy crash at the Belgian Grand Prix, also confessed his family took the news much better than he did.

"I took it very badly... [my wife] Helen had an inner strength that I didn't have. She senses things more. She had a feeling that Paul was going to be OK. But I had an inner fear....I was so frightened."

Paul Stewart is currently being treated at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.
