Stoddart Plays Down Asiatech Option

Monday August 6th, 2001

Minardi team boss Paul Stoddart has played down the possibility of a deal to run Asiatech power units in 2002.

Stoddart admitted that pairing Malaysian driver Alex Yoong with Asiatech engines would be a major financial boost to his team for next year. But he revealed that he is still focused on sealing a deal with Cosworth or Ferrari, to make his outfit competitive, rather than Asiatech who supplied Arrows this season.

"They are promising a lot more, but it is a bit like our current engine - we all know what it will take to get there but it is never done until it's done," Stoddart said.

"I think probably if you analyse it Alex (Yoong) and Asiatech could be a big marriage, but they are not linked in any way because if we got Alex in we're more likely to go for a red or a green job."
