Sauber Surprised to Remain in Fourth Place

Monday August 6th, 2001

Peter Sauber admitted this weekend he is suprised to find his team still fourth in the 2001 Constructors' Championship but said they will fight to finish the season in that position.

"I am as surprised as anyone that we are still fourth in the Championship," Sauber said. "We are maybe the smallest team in Formula One apart from Minardi. I think Jaguar's budget is more than double ours.

"It wouldn't have been realistic to even set ourselves a goal of fourth. Last season we were eighth and our only goal was to be better, maybe seventh. In the past we have had a problem keeping up with the other teams, but this year we have a good, lean structure in the team and two young drivers who are like a breath of fresh air.

"Now we will fight to try to keep fourth place but it will be very difficult and we shouldn't be too disappointed if we don't succeed. If we do succeed, however, it will be like Ferrari winning the championship."
