Coulthard Admits McLaren Have Work to Do

Sunday August 19th, 2001

David Coulthard has said that he and his McLaren team need to go back to the drawing board in an attempt to catch the resurgent Ferrari team.

Ferrari have won the Drivers' and Constructors' Championships for the last two seasons and Coulthard believes he and McLaren need to review and improve their performance before next year.

"I think that there's one or two issues about our performance during the year," said Coulthard. "What might have been, if we had been in a situation where we had a car equal to the Ferrari or the car advantage that we had a couple of years ago.

"But that isn't the case this year and we have to work together as a team to try and create that again. Michael deserves the Championship and he's been consistently fast, made good use of what he's had and hasn't made any mistakes. I think you can't take that away from him or Ferrari. They've performed and we just go back to the drawing board."

Schumacher has failed to finish just two races this season, while Coulthard has not passed the chequered flag three times in the campaign and has scored only two wins to the German's seven.
