Villeneuve Willing to Face Eau Rouge

Thursday August 30th, 2001

British American Racing driver Jacques Villeneuve has banished the memories of a serious crash at the Eau Rouge corner in 1999 and has labelled the corner the best in Formula One as he prepares to face it again this weekend.

Both Villeneuve and his then teammate Ricardo Zonta wrecked their BAR cars in crashes at Eau Rouge in qualifying for the 1999 Belgian Grand Prix at Spa.

But Canadian Villeneuve is not fazed by the high-speed section of the track and the thrill-seeking driver cannot wait to face its challenge again this weekend.

"It's the best corner," said Villeneuve. "It's fast, very fast, but it's also the layout. It's completely blind, you see a wall in front of you, then you turn again. It's too tight for the speed you're actually going, and you shouldn't be able to go that fast through it.

"But because it rises, you have a lot of downforce and you just muscle through it, and wow, you get up through the other side. You just go in and somehow the car does the rest, while you just hang through it. You have to survive and it's just fantastic."
