Haug Warns of Toyota's Potential

Tuesday December 11th, 2001

The new Toyota Formula One team could surprise some people next year, according to Mercedes-Benz motorsports boss Norbert Haug.

The Japanese team, who have spent 2001 carrying out an intensive testing programme with their drivers Allan McNish and Mika Salo, will make their racing debut next year.

Aided by what it is believed to be one of the biggest budgets in the sport and by chief designer Gustav Brunner, Haug believes Toyota will be able to spring some surprises.

"People say they have better financial resources than the rest of the teams," Haug said in an interview with Sport1. "I think Gustav Brunner is capable of designing and building a good car, and they have a good base on the engine side too. From my point of view, Toyota will be a surprise."

The Cologne-based outfit will be the first Formula One team to unveil their 2002 car, on December 17.
