Mark Webber has ended speculation that he could join the Minardi Formula One team by signing a deal with Super Nova to compete in the F3000 Championship this year.
Australian Webber, who is also the official test driver for the Benetton Formula One team, had been linked to a drive with Minardi, who were taken over by Webber's compatriot and close friend Paul Stoddart.
Stoddart is still to confirm Minardi's drivers for the 2001 season and Webber drove for his European Racing team in last year's F3000 Championship. But the deal is now unlikely to happen.
"I am really looking forward to the new season, especially due to the fact that I will be working with Super Nova which will be really exciting," said Webber, who will drive alongside Mario Haberfeld at Super Nova.
"I hope that I can get them the results that they are used to. We will obviously be challenging very, very hard for the championship, which is my goal for the start of the season.
"I am hoping that we will be able to win the title because that would be a great achievement."
Team manager David Sears said: "It has taken us a long time to make our decision, however with Mark Webber we have a proven race winner and one of the title favourites."
