McLaren Test Behind Closed Doors at Jerez

Wednesday January 31st, 2001

The McLaren-Mercedes team is secretly testing at the Jerez circuit in southern Spain since last Monday, with regular drivers Mika Hakkinen and David Coulthard, joined by test driver Alex Wurz.

The surprise, however, was the appearance of Briton Darren Turner at the wheel of the car.

Turner, who drove a Formula One car for the first time five years ago after winning the McLaren/Autosport/BRDC Young Driver of the Year award, competed in the German DTM last season.

German Formula Three champion Girgio Pantano and British Formula Three contender Gary Paffett are also expected to test.

The Woking-based team, who are to unveil their 2001 challenger on February 7, will continue working at the Spanish track until Thursday, still behind closed doors.
