Beating Prost's Record is Not Schumacher's Ambition

Tuesday June 19th, 2001

World champion Michael Schumacher is looking for a win at his home event this weekend at the European Grand Prix, which would put him well on his way to beating Alain Prost's record 51 wins, but the German has admitted his main ambition is to win races and titles and not breaking records.

Schumacher has already made 48 career wins, leaving him three short of a place in the record books. However, he is focusing on the race itself rather than looking too far ahead at records.

"It could be a nice statistic to look back to, but I am battling for any victory I can, and championship I can," said Schumacher. "So I am not looking in a particular challenge to that record, meaning if I have achieved that I can stop there - that's not my ambition."

Schumacher has scored five wins in eight races this season, and the three-time champion has nine events left to edge closer to Prost's record.
