British American Racing driver Jacques Villeneuve has called for Mika Hakkinen to help McLaren teammate in his championship battle against Ferrari's Michael Schumacher.
After the first eight rounds of the 2001 season, Coulthard trails Schumacher by 18 points, while Hakkinen - enduring one of his worst campaigns in Formula One - is a massive 50 behind the Ferrari driver. Coulthard has scored two wins so far and he retired from the first time in Canada two weeks ago.
Hakkinen, who has only eight points and whose best result has been a third place, should help Coulthard, according to 1997 world champion Villeneuve.
"David is still in with a chance of the title," Villeneuve said. "He is probably the one that has been driving the best this season. He has carried the team this year and he is still in the fight. If he keeps going like he is, he will be a force to be reckoned with the rest of the season.
"David has helped Mika a lot in the past so it is probably about time that Mika helps him now. Mika's season has been quite bad and he can help David."
