BMW motorsport director Gerhard Berger has described Ralf Schumacher's recently strengthened relationship with the Williams team as the "perfect marriage".
Berger spoke out after Schumacher signed a three-year extension to his current deal with BMW-Williams, meaning he will now be with the team until after the 2004 season.
"I think it was a logical move for both of us," said Berger. "I think Ralf saw that we are going to be able to give him some competitive material and we saw that Ralf maybe is the one who can compete with Michael and that's all that we need. So I think it's a perfect marriage.
"I suppose something like this (Ralf being a proven winner) always helps, but that was not necessary. When we look to his work we know that he has a very good relationship."
Berger dismissed rumours that Schumacher's new deal will hinder Jenson Button's future chances with the team. Button is currently being loaned to Benetton for two seasons from Williams.
Berger added: "For Jenson, it just means that for next year we are going to stay with the drivers as we are - nothing more."
