Hakkinen Not Surprised by Williams Form

Monday June 25th, 2001

McLaren driver Mika Hakkinen has said he is not surprised by the impressive form of the Williams team this season.

Williams had a good season last year when they started their collaboration with engine suppliers BMW and finished third in the constructors' championship.

But this season they have seemingly surpassed that with two wins for Ralf Schumacher and a series of impressive performances from his teammate Juan Pablo Montoya, who secured his second runners-up finish of the season at Sunday's European Grand Prix.

Hakkinen, who was only sixth at the Nurburgring and now lies behind Montoya in the standings, admitted he expected the Williams to shine in 2001.

"I am not surprised," said Hakkinen. "What they did already last year they showed their strengths and it was just a question of time when they were going to be there winning Grands Prix. Now they're doing it, and I am not surprised."
