Honda Needs a New Engine, Says Panis

Friday June 29th, 2001

Frenchman Olivier Panis believes engine supplier Honda can not compete against top class opposition without a new engine, but if this can be achieved, they will be challenging for wins next season.

Honda are currently supplying BAR and Jordan, who have scored only twelve and thirteen points respectively and both teams have been unable to fight for the top spots. Panis, in his first season with the BAR team, believes the Japanese manufacturer needs a new unit to compete at the highest level.

"I think Honda is in Formula One to win but I'm sure that next year we will have a completely new engine and that will be a big step up," said Panis.

"This year the engine is quite good but we need more power to be honest. But everybody needs more power. I think Honda will make a very strong job for next year."
