Stoddart Accuses Arrows of Intentional Blocking

Saturday June 30th, 2001

European Minardi's boss Paul Stoddart has accused the Arrows team of intentionally blocking Spanish driver Fernando Alonso during today's qualifying session for the French Grand Prix.

Alonso, claimed Stoddart, was blocked intentionally by Brazilian Enrique Bernoldi while he was starting his final attempt being assisted by a member of the Arrows team placed at the end of the pitlane.

"What would otherwise have been a reasonably good qualifying session for European Minardi was marred by an intentional blocking manoeuvre by Arrows and its driver, Enrique Bernoldi, which spoiled Fernando's last run," said Stoddart.

"This was orchestrated by a member of the Arrows team, positioned in the pitlane, who ensured Bernoldi's exit from his garage was timed to perfection. This unsporting behaviour undoubtedly lost Fernando what would have been his best run of the afternoon."

Spaniard Alonso ended today's session in 21st place while Bernoldi was right in front of him in 20th position.
