Williams Warns Montoya Over Current Form

Tuesday May 8th, 2001

Colombian sensation Juan Pablo Montoya has admitted his team boss Frank Williams has put him under pressure to get fit and lose some weight in order to perform better in his debut season in Formula One.

Montoya joined Williams at the end of 2000 after spending two years in the CART championship, where the cars don't require such a high fitness level. However, the more demanding Formula One machines have seen Montoya struggling during some races, and the 25-year old admitted Williams had warned him about his lack of form.

"For him (Williams), fitness is really important," Montoya told The Observer. "It's like the most important thing.

"He came to me after practice in Brazil. I was breathing hard because we were testing and I was really pushing, you know? But he comes to me and says, 'You're not fit enough at the moment. When I hear you talking to the team I can hear you breathing.'"
