Barrichello Defended by Stewart

Wednesday May 9th, 2001

Jackie Stewart, triple Formula One World Champion, has stepped in to defend Brazilian Rubens Barrichello following the rumours about the Ferrari driver's future with the 2000 champion team.

Barrichello, in his second season with the Maranello-based team, has been subject to a lot of speculation regarding his future, as it was thought that Ferrari were unhappy with the Brazilian's performance this year - Barrichello lies 24 points behind team mate Michael Schumacher after five races.

However, Stewart believes Barrichello is doing a good job at Ferrari, and suggested the Italian team would be wrong to let him go.

"I don't think he should be given any criticism," Stewart told Motorsport News. "The guy is a very talented racing driver certainly one of the top six drivers in the world.

"I don't know what problems he's been having so far this year, but I don't see anyone better for Ferrari, to be honest."
