McLaren technical director Adrian Newey believes the team's current leading driver David Coulthard is racing better than ever, after another win at the Austrian Grand Prix on Sunday.
Newey believes Coulthard is mentally stronger after several years in the shadow of teammate and double world champion Mika Hakkinen, and this season he has seen the determination of the British driver grow.
"I think he (Coulthard) is better than ever," said Newey. "He's obviously got his head in the right place. He's keeping his focus. It's psychology really, it's the same as a tennis player or golfer.
"It helps everybody if you're doing well but I think most of the team is determined. I think his (Coulthard's) side of the garage has been strengthened compared to last year, but obviously we've also tried to strengthen on Mika's side."
Newey also revealed that Hakkinen's failure to get off the start-line in the Austrian Grand Prix was down to a procedural problem in operating the launch control.
