Alonso: Schumacher Not in a Class of his Own

Thursday November 15th, 2001

Spanish driver Fernando Alonso believes four-time World Champion Michael Schumacher is not in a class of his own in Formula One despite his dominant performances.

20-year old Alonso, who made his Grand Prix debut in 2001 with the Minardi team and has already been tipped as a future winner, believes Italian drivers Jarno Trulli and Giancarlo Fisichella are on par with Schumacher.

"I think in the other teams, there are three or four drivers who have the level of Michael but they are unable to show it," said Alonso in an interview with Autosport magazine. "It is difficult to say, maybe Jarno, Giancarlo and there are others.

"It's very difficult for a driver to say that another driver is the best. Among the top teams - Ferrari, Williams and McLaren - Schumacher was the best [in 2001]."

Ferrari's Schumacher won the 2001 title setting a new record for the most number of points with 123 after winning nine Grands Prix.
