Australian Mark Webber, believed to be one of the favourites to land a drive with the European Minardi team next season, has said he is still deep in talks regarding his future.
Webber, who was the official Benetton-Renault test driver last season, is also in talks with Renault about staying on, despite their recent signing of Fernando Alonso as test driver for 2002. Renault, formerly Benetton, already have Jarno Trulli and Jenson Button as their drivers for 2002, and with Webber eyeing a race drive for next year Minardi could be his only option.
"We are talking all the time," said Webber. "We have been for months now. Hopefully something will be sorted out soon. In my mind, I would like it to be done now, but it is either done or it is not.
"It is hard to say how confident I am of getting on the grid next year, but I think the chances are reasonable."
Webber has been thrown into contention for a drive with Minardi after Spaniard Alonso was recalled by his manager and Renault boss Flavio Briatore after a successful racing year with Paul Stoddart's team.
