BAR Boosted by Tobacco Profits

Tuesday October 30th, 2001

The British American Racing Formula One team received a boost on Tuesday with the news that major backers British American Tobacco (BAT) are resisting the crush of the onset of recession.

As other teams are left wondering if they will survive the financial tightening, BAR's big money tobacco backers have announced an increase in pre-tax profits in the last year.

Martin Broughton, chairman of the London-based firm, revealed that the company was still running smoothly despite the terrorist attacks on America, but was wary of possible future worries.

"The terrorist attacks in the US have had little immediate impact on our business," he said. "But they have added a further dimension to the economic uncertainties that were already apparent."
