French manufacturer Michelin will introduce a new tyre for the Malaysian Grand Prix in two weeks time.
Juan Pablo Montoya, who finished in second place at Sunday's Australian Grand Prix behind the Bridgestone-shod Ferrari of Michael Schumacher, complained the Michelin tyres on his Williams were inconsistent, and claimed the low track temperatures on Sunday benefited their rival's rubber.
After the race, Michelin boss Pierre Dupasquier revealed the manufacturer will introduce a new tyre with a different compound and construction in Malaysia, when they are expected to perform better thanks to the higher temperatures of the Asian country.
"We have some tyres that are different in terms of compound and construction," said Dupasquier. "We have already tested them and will be running them again at Silverstone next week. I don't imagine conditions will be quite like those we'll see in Malaysia, however. I can't see the track temperature touching 50 degrees."
However, despite being unable to match the pace of Schumacher's Ferrari, the Michelin-shod cars filled the five remaining point-scoring positions, and Dupasquier said the information gathered in Melbourne will be useful for the remainder of the season.
"For us the main thing was that we got to run all afternoon in consistently dry conditions, which allowed us to gather strong, consistent data for the first time all weekend," he added. "When we analyse the details we will glean some useful information."
