Berger confirmed for German GP

After missing 3 consecutive races, Gerhard Berger will drive for Benetton at the German Grand Prix in Hockenheim.

Berger, age 37, also announced that he expects to continue in Formula One for another two or three seasons.

Alexander Wurz, a fellow Austrian, replaced Berger during the Canadian, French and British Grands Prix. He achieved substantial success during his rookie period -- out-qualifying teammate Jean Alesi twice and finishing on the podium at Silverstone. Wurz has been rumored to join Sauber after Berger returns but stated, "I want to concentrate on Benetton."

Tyre War Update

Autosport reported that Bridgestone will only be supplying the same four teams next year: Prost, Stewart, TWR Arrows and Minardi. All other teams have contracts with Goodyear through 1998.

M. Schumacher

After a Ferrari mechanical failure at Monza this week, Michael Schumacher insisted that Ferrari rectify technical troubles within the team. Both he and Eddie Irvine failed to finish the British Grand Prix. The two-time World Champion stated, "I am unhappy. If we can not complete a race, it means we have relaxed a bit... we must work harder to examine the components that have failed."

CART

British drivers found great success in qualifying at Toronto's Molson Grand Prix as they took front row. The Scottish driver Dario Franchitti took pole while ex-McLaren driver Mark Blundell took second. Both are drivers are backed by Mercedes power. Newman-Haas driver Michael Andretti, winner of five of the last seven races in Toronto and also an ex-McLaren driver, classified fourth on the grid. Ganassi driver Alessandro Zanardi, formerly of Team Lotus, placed sixth.
