In an interview to BBC Radio, FIA president, Max Mosley, rejected altogether all criticism about the latest rule changes. "It's all nonsense," Mosley told BBC's Motor Racing Correspondent, Jonathan Legard. "There's a great deal of exaggeration and nonsense talked by people sitting in Formula One's paddock. They don't go outside and see what happens there. They don't ask themselves why it is that so many people are watching F1.

"It's not chance. F1 has overtaken just about every other competitor it had in the 1970's. Only the Olympics and the World Cup are bigger."

Mosley went on to claim that current Formula One races are actually even more interesting than past races. "F1 is more interesting now than it's ever been. If you look at the races in the 70's they were very boring," he said. "People look back at the old races, remember the good ones, forget the bad ones and think all races ten years ago were like that. It's simply not true. For example look at Monza, there were more than 100 overtaking manoeuvres and it was terribly boring. People forget that."

"Sure, overtaking is a little bit difficult but what they're trying to do is solve a problem that doesn't exist. If the race in Canada isn't spectacular, it's not because of the regulations.

"It's semi-hysteria. The question is not about the drivers enjoying it. What about the audience? If the drivers are frustrated for an hour-and-a-half every fortnight they can compensate for that by spending the millions they earn as a result of so many people wanting to watch. I wouldn't mind putting up with a little bit of frustration in return for a multi-million dollar salary.

Mosley, however, conceded that Formula One might need some minor changes, which he calls 'fine tuning'. "If we want to make overtaking easier then I would argue that involves reducing the aerodynamic efficiency of the cars, which is very easy for a technical person. I could probably have a go at it myself," he said. "But it's nonsense that the tyres make it difficult to overtake. It's aerodynamics."
