Shortly after he retired from the Hungarian Grand Prix, three laps to the finish line, driver Jean Alesi announced he is leaving the Sauber team. Alesi said he has not signed yet for another team and therefore does not know where he will be next year, but stressed that either way, he is "finished" with Sauber.

Talking to ITV's commentator, James Allen, Alesi said: "I'm frustrated, because since the beginning of the season I try, I try, I try. And I have... no present, I will say. So I cannot finish the races in a good situation. But now it is finished with Sauber. Next year I will drive in another country, in another team. I dunno yet 100% [where I will be], because I didn't sign with anybody. But my life with Sauber is finished [...] I have another four races. My two best are coming - Monza, Suzuka. I can do well, I hope, if I can see the chequered flag. So I thank everybody [in Sauber] for this two years here. And I think it's time for me to do something else."
