Minardi Announce Mazzacane as Second Driver

Monday February 14th, 2000

Italian Formula One team Minardi named Argentine Gaston Mazzacane today as their second driver for the new season.

Mazzacane, 24, was Minardi's test driver last year. He was chosen ahead of compatriot Norberto Fontana and Brazilian Max Wilson for the second berth alongside Spaniard Marc Gene.

"(He) gave a very favourable impression during a testing session at the Fiorano race track a few weeks ago," Minardi said in a statement.

Minardi are due to unveil their car for 2000 at the Guggenheim art museum in Spain on Wednesday. Their principal sponsor this season is Spanish telecoms company Telefonica.

The season starts in Australia on March 12.
