Hakkinen's Win Put Under FIA Investigation

Sunday July 16th, 2000

Mika Hakkinen's Austrian Grand Prix victory was cast into doubt on Sunday, after Formula One's ruling body said they were investigating an electronic box on his McLaren.

FIA spokeswoman Agnes Kaiser said that one of the mandatory seals was missing from the electronic box and would be investigated in London before the German Grand Prix in two weeks time.

To ensure all teams conform to engine control regulations, some electronic parts within the cars are sealed by the FIA. It is one of these seals that was missing from Hakkinen's car, and the FIA will now investigate whether or not it was delieberately tampered with or fell off accidentally.

An outcome of the investigation is not expected until tomorrow the earliest, and the race results remain unofficial.
