Friday May 5th, 2000 David Coulthard completed just one lap in Friday's first practice for the Spanish Grand Prix as he returned to work after his escape from a plane crash in France three days ago. The 29-year-old Scot, who escaped with bruised ribs and grazed elbows from the crash at Lyon that killed the plane's two pilots, spent most of the session in the McLaren garage. He did only one lap -- to check the car's systems -- before deciding to stay out of the fray. While Coulthard remained out of sight, the world championship leading German Michael Schumacher topped the times for Ferrari after completing only four laps. Schumacher, who was also fastest last week in testing for the Spanish event, clocked an early best time of one minute and 21.982 seconds. He was half a second clear of his nearest rival and Ferrari team mate Brazilian Rubens Barrichello. World champion Mika Hakkinen of Finland was third fastest in his McLaren ahead of Ralf Schumacher, in a Williams, Frenchman Jean Alesi in a Prost and Italian Giancarlo Fisichella in a Benetton.
