Coulthard Ready to Leave McLaren

Wednesday November 1st, 2000

McLaren driver David Coulthard confessed he would leave the team in order to fight for the Formula One World Championship if he felt he had a better chance somewhere else.

The Scot, who joined McLaren at the beginning of 1996, has not been able to finish in front of his teammate and double World Champion Mika Hakkinen since 1997, and has lived under the Finn’s shadow ever since.

"If there was an opportunity to leave the team and enhance my chances of winning a world championship, then yes, I would,” Coulthard said.

After winning three races this season and finishing third in the drivers’ championship, Coulthard said he wants to improve his driving to be a better challenger, adding that he had to start by beating Hakkinen.

"Half of it is beating Mika, and I believe that half is achievable. Part of that will come from me and part of that will come from the team. It's the usual thing.

"There are things that I need to go over from last season, like my jump-start in America. Equally there are things that the team will need to improve on."
