Jordan Designer Quits to Join Benetton

Thursday January 4th, 2001

Mark Smith, the chief designer of Jordan, has left the Formula One team to join Benetton, two months before the start of the new season.

Smith follows Jordan's former technical director Mike Gascoyne to the Benetton team and he becomes the third key member to leave the Silverstone-based outfit after race engineer Sam Michaels also moved to Williams.

"Mark has been at Jordan for 10 years, since the team began. It is a big loss for us, there is no doubt about it," a Jordan spokeswoman told the BBC.

Smith will work in the same capacity at his new team as he did under Gascoyne at Jordan.

Smith had already completed work on Jordan's 2001 car, the EJ11, which will be unveiled on January 16.
