Ralf Fastest Again at Jerez - Day Two

Tuesday January 9th, 2001

Ralf Schumacher was fastest for the second consecutive day of testing at the Jerez circuit in southern Spain, where Williams and Benetton are carrying out a three-day programme.

The Williams star, driving a hybrid FW22 chassis with 2001 components, spent most of the day testing several different tyre compounds from Michelin, setting a time almost one second faster than Giancarlo Fisichella's Benetton.

The Italian was the only driver present for the Renault-powered outfit, on a day where both teams were forced to use wet-weather tyres as heavy rain began to fall two hours from the end of the session.

Williams's test driver Marc Gene was third quickest after completing a race distance in the car fitted with the new BMW engine, and the Spaniard was happy with the day's work, running without any problems.

"I'm very satisfied today," Gene said. "The BMW engine is really good. It was the first time that we tested it properly and we had no problems at all."

Colombian Juan Pablo Montoya was fourth fastest, also testing different Michelin tyres, completing a total of 74 laps.

The three-day testing session will conclude on Wednesday.
