Three-Wheeled Minardi Leaves Alonso Shocked

Sunday July 15th, 2001

Fernando Alonso finished three laps down in last place at the British Grand Prix today for the Minardi team, the Spanish driver suffering a bizarre incident which forced him to complete a lap around the Silverstone circuit with only three wheels,

Alonso saw his left front wheel roll off into the gravel trap as he entered a curve shortly before his second scheduled pitstop at the British Grand Prix. The 19-year-old continued on three wheels, bringing the car back to the pits and then resuming the race where he lapped at the same pace as before.

"It was quite a big shock," he said after finishing 16th. "Fortunately I was close to the pitlane entrance."

Minardi said in a statement it planned to introduce shortly a revised version of its car with a smaller and lighter gearbox as well as a new aerodynamic package. The Italian team have scored one point in the last five years and none since 1999.
