Briton Jenson Button has praised Colombian Juan Pablo Montoya after the Williams driver's impressive first season in Formula One.
Montoya replaced Button at the Williams team in 2001 after the young Brit had made his debut with them the previous season, when he became the youngest ever point scorer in Formula One. But in order to make way for Montoya, Button was forced to move to Benetton this season, struggling most of the year while the rookie scored three pole positions and one victory.
"I have to admire the way Juan Pablo Montoya has performed with my old team Williams," Button wrote in a column for the Sunday Mirror newspaper. "Obviously it would have been great to be up there with him this season, but it was not to be.
"It was good to see Williams do well and winning races. Good luck to Montoya - he deserves all the credit he gets. Hopefully I will be in a situation to give him a run for his money next season."
Button, who will remain with the Benetton team next year when they will be renamed Renault, believes they will be able to fight for some wins, and added that Montoya and teammate Ralf Schumacher will be World Champion Michael Schumacher's main rivals.
"I think Montoya and Ralf will be the main threat to Michael Schumacher next season but we are definitely an outside bet for podium finishes and a couple of wins," he added.
