Warwick Downplays Montoya's Challenge

Friday February 15th, 2002

Former Formula One star Derek Warwick believes Williams driver Juan Pablo Montoya is not on par with World Champion Michael Schumacher, stating that there is "too much emotional involvement" with Montoya.

"Yes, Montoya is brave and sure he is quick, but he still doesn't have the overall package of Michael Schumacher," said Warwick, who raced 146 times before his retirement in 1993.

"Schumacher is unquestionably the best driver today. Montoya may be lucky and win the World Championship this year, but there will be only one real World Champion at the end of the year - and that is Michael Schumacher."

Warwick believes that Schumacher is one of the best he has seen and says that no man on the grid comes anywhere close to his level of supremacy.

"He has reached a level nobody else has - be it Hakkinen, Montoya, Irvine, Villeneuve," said Warwick. "They can only aspire to his level."
