Schumacher Wants Barrichello to Stay at Ferrari

Thursday March 28th, 2002

World Champion Michael Schumacher would like his Ferrari team to retain the services of teammate Rubens Barrichello after this year.

29-year old Barrichello, who joined the Italian squad at the start of the 2000 season, has a contract with Ferrari until the end of 2002, and reports in the Italian press suggested that the Brazilian was ready to leave the team this year.

But Schumacher denied there were any problems with Barrichello and said he would like to have him as teammate again in 2003.

"If it was up to me, I would renew Rubens' contract," said Schumacher today. "I think he has done a great job since he has been at Ferrari and I know what he can do. As for all the speculations, that's just down to journalists with newspaper pages to fill."

Schumacher, who leads the Championship with 14 points, will use Ferrari's new F2002 car at the Brazilian Grand Prix while Barrichello will continue with the F2001.
