Brawn Angered by Barrichello Penalty

Saturday March 30th, 2002

Ferrari technical director Ross Brawn revealed his anger over the decision to penalise Rubens Barrichello for leaving the pitlane when the red light was on at the end of Saturday morning practice.

Home hero Barrichello will be punished with the loss of his fastest time in qualifying for Sunday's race at Interlagos but Brawn said just before qualifying began in Interlagos, that the red light in the Brazilian's car did not come on until he had crossed the line in the pitlane.

"It is a harsh penalty," said Brawn. "That is clear from what we see in the video and the data. I have a lot of respect for the FIA but it is not good and they have to look at how they make these decisions."

Jordan driver Takuma Sato, who is having a weekend full problems at Interlagos, suffered the same fate as Barrichello for passing a red light at the end of the pit lane during practice on Friday.
