Salo Pleased with 'Deserved' Sixth Place

Sunday March 31st, 2002

Salo Pleased with 'Deserved' PointDespite playing down the expectations created around them following a lucky point at their debut Grand Prix in Australia, the Toyota team showed an impressive form again at Sunday's Brazilian Grand Prix with another sixth position for Mika Salo.

The Finn, who had already scored a point in Melbourne after benefitting from an accident that took nearly half the field out of the race, continued to show that the Japanese squad, making their Formula One debut this year, mean business.

After a strong qualifying performance, setting the tenth quickest time in the team's first race at the Interlagos circuit, Salo completed another brilliant performance to finish sixth in Sunday's race and said the result had nothing to do with good luck.

"I am very happy with this point," admitted Salo. "It's a great result for the team. The race was hard, but I did not have any significant problems, so what can I say? I don't think this was a lucky point. The car works well and is reliable, so we deserve this result.

"It is still the same car that we used in Australia. For Imola, we have new parts coming and I hope we can take another step forward."

Teammate Allan McNish was forced to retire after spinning off the track on lap 41.
