The FIA's World Motor Sport Council has ratified the ruling body's stance regarding the Head and Neck Support system.
After meeting today in Paris, the World Motor Sport Council said it will not be permitted to race in the future without the HANS safety device. Ferrari's Rubens Barrichello had been allowed to race without it at the Malaysian Grand Prix after he asked for one-off dispensation because he was suffering from a small hernia.
The FIA, however, said today in a statement that in the future a team will have to replace a driver if he is not capable of using the HANS.
"Further to a note sent to the Formula One teams by the FIA Technical Director, the WMSC confirmed that if any driver is unable to wear the HANS device for medical or other reasons, the team concerned will have to replace him," said the FIA statement.
Minardi driver Justin Wilson had to be taken to hospital after the Sepang race as he suffered temporary paralysis in his arm due to a pinched nerve caused by the collar system, which had slipped.
