Formula One testing continued on Wednesday at the Mugello and Estoril circuits, as the teams are getting ready for the United States Grand Prix next week at Indianapolis.
At the Italian track, McLaren, Ferrari and Sauber tested for the second consecutive day. McLaren’s Oliver Panis was fastest again with a best time of 1:24.798 after completing a massive 113 laps, testing a new harder compound Bridgestone tyre.
The Frenchman was joined today by Italian Grand Prix winner Michael Schumacher, who replaced Luca Badoer at the wheel of the Ferrari.
The German driver continued working on the aerodynamic set-up of his car, also carrying out some tyre testing. He completed 86 laps, with a best time of 1:26.299.
Kimi Raikkonen, this year’s British Formula Renault Champion, was also present with the Sauber team. The Finn was only seven tenths of a second slower than Schumacher after completing 41 laps.
There will be no testing at Mugello on Thursday due to the funeral of Paolo Gislimberti, the fire marshal who died during the Italian Grand Prix last Sunday.
Meanwhile the Williams and Benetton teams tested again at Estoril, Portugal, with test drivers Bruno Junqueira and Mark Webber at the wheel.
The Australian driver was fastest for Benetton, setting a time of 1:21.704, while Junqueira was second for Williams with a best lap of 1:22.255.
