World Champion Michael Schumacher suffered a set-back in his preparation for Sunday's Spanish Grand Prix during the morning warm-up, when his Ferrari ground to a halt and he was forced to park it at the side of the track.
As Schumacher's Brazilian teammate Rubens Barrichello continued his impressive pace to top the times at the cloud-covered Circuit de Catalunya, the German was left sitting helplessly at the side of the track.
But the session was stopped by the trouble-stricken Minardi team for the third time this weekend when Australian Mark Webber's rear wing failed and he spun into the gravel at turn one with one minute to go.
Webber and his teammate Alex Yoong had both suffered front wing failures during running on Saturday and Minardi were forced to modify all their front wings for safety reasons.
The parts returned in time for the team to compete in the warm-up session, but the latest crash, from which Webber escaped unharmed, left the Minardi's participation in doubt and they will have to investigate the problem before making a decision to race.
Nick Heidfeld, of the Ferrari-powered Sauber team, was second fastest once the final minute was concluded, with Schumacher still managing to claim third despite the problems that left him walking back to the pits.
Brazilian Felipe Massa made it four Ferrari engines in the top four by finishing one place ahead of the surprisingly competitive Arrows car of Heinz-Harald Frentzen, who finished the session fifth.
German Ralf Schumacher was the fastest Michelin runner but could only manage sixth place, one spot ahead of the second Arrows of Enrique Bernoldi, who was also forced to stop at the side of the track after a problem.
Olivier Panis, eighth for British American Racing Honda, Takuma Sato, ninth for Jordan Honda, and tenth-placed Jenson Button, of Renault, completed the top ten runners.
